An Evening With Patrick Grant

October 1 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

At 7pm on Tuesday 1st of October, Patrick Grant will be giving a talk at Settle Victoria Hall. Why? Because he has a lot to say about clothes – who makes them, and how they are made. He also wonders why we keep buying more when our wardrobes are full to bursting with clothes we never wear. In fact, today, the average person has nearly five times as many clothes as they did just 50 years ago. Last year, 100 billion garments were produced worldwide, most made from oil, 30% of which were not even sold, and the equivalent of one bin lorry full of clothing is dumped in landfill or burned every single second. In this talk, hear Grant passionately discuss his love of clothes, but also the despair he feels at the crisis of consumption and the broken global system in fashion. Maybe, he argues, we could make ourselves happier if we rediscovered the joy of living with fewer, better-quality things.

Tickets are available from Settle Victoria Hall – £10 for talk only, £30 for talk PLUS book.

Grant will also be signing copies of his book Less after the talk.

With a career in fashion spanning nearly two decades, Grant is a regular on television and radio as a commentator on the clothing and textile industries, but he is best known as a judge on the BBC’s Great British Sewing Bee. He holds an honorary Doctorate from Heriot Watt University, is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and is in the Business of Fashion 500 index of the most influential people in global fashion. In 2016 he launched Community Clothing, a campaigning clothing brand which supports thousands of UK jobs through making and selling affordable high-quality clothing.
